Holton Solar Farm was constructed on Holton Airfield, approximately 1.5 miles to the north east of Halesworth. The site comprises two sections of disused airfield built during World War II as RAF Halesworth. Planning was approved for the site with no objections from the local community.
The site has good existing levels of screening and further biodiversity enhancement measures have been implemented. During the operation phase species rich grassland areas under and around the solar panels have been established.
The solar development has not affected the opportunity for the landowner to utilise adjacent land parcels for alternative renewable energy schemes and agriculture.
The Planning Committee Report concluded:
“There is no doubt that this will be a significant development. Landscape impact is likely to be the most critical issue but the site is well screened and this together with the topography and the mitigation, means that it is not considered that this will be significant. "
